A narrow windy road through a river valley connects Sarajevo to Mostar.
Pockmarked buildings in small towns, shadows of war.
We stopped for lunch at a beautiful restaurant along a river in the shadow of the green valley.
A manmade tributary of the river flows through the restaurant, turning the spit that is roasting the lamb we ate for lunch.
Arriving in Mostar, Bosnia. We visited “old town” one of the most amazing, fairytale medieval sections of a town I have ever experienced.
The famous bridge, Stari Most, after which the town was named. During the revolution, the town was a frontline. The bridge was destroyed and opposing armies camped on either side of the river. After the war an effort to rebuild the bridge to its former glory was successful. One can still sense the tension in the atmosphere when crossing from one bank to another—the town’s inhabitants remain somewhat divided in their loyalties.
